Top 5 Equine Photography Locations in Northern Illinois
When planning your equine portrait session, selecting the right location can make all the difference. In Northern Illinois, we’re lucky to have a variety of horse-friendly spots that offer stunning scenery without compromising safety or access. Whether you're dreaming of windswept prairie shots or golden hour silhouettes by the water, these five tried-and-true locations are perfect for capturing those unforgettable moments with your horse.
As an equine photographer based in Northern IL and Southern WI, I’ve scouted each of these locations with a photographer’s eye and a horse owner’s heart. Bonus? Every single one is approved for horses.
1. The Hollows Conservation Area – Cary, Illinois
If you’re looking for a mix of wooded trails, open prairies, and lake backdrops, The Hollows is a dream. This conservation area features accessible trails and ample space for riding and relaxation. It’s especially beautiful in the fall with its golden tones and quiet atmosphere.
2. Glacial Park – McHenry County, Illinois
One of the most equestrian-friendly spots in the area, Glacial Park boasts over 40 miles of designated riding trails. Between tall prairie grass, peaceful creeks, and wooded sections, it’s perfect for both soft, editorial-style portraits and dynamic movement shots.
3. Prairie Trail North – Ringwood/Richmond, Illinois
If you prefer a more minimalist, open-space feel, Prairie Trail North is your go-to. Flat trails make it comfortable for horses of all ages and experience levels, and the open sky creates a light, airy aesthetic in photos.
4. Moraine Hills State Park – McHenry, Illinois
This location offers a little bit of everything: gentle hills, boardwalks, ponds, and a variety of trails. Horses are allowed on designated paths, and it’s incredibly serene, making it great for more intimate shoots between horse and rider.
5. Your Own Barn in Illinois
Sometimes the most meaningful images come from where your story already lives. I typically travel to my client’s barn, and they have never disappointed!
Ready to Plan Your Session?
Every location I recommend is not only horse-approved, it's also chosen with the flow of a session in mind. Safety, scenery, and light all matter. And no matter which you choose, your equine session will be customized to reflect your bond, your horse’s personality, and your vision.
