Creating My Session Vision Board: Why I Ask Every Client to Do This

Why I Ask for a Vision Board Before Every Session

One of the most powerful tools I use to guide a session doesn’t actually come from me. It comes from you, my client.

I ask each client to send me a simple vision board. This is your creative space to share what inspires you: poses, tones, outfits, or vibes you want to capture during your session. You don’t need to be a designer. You just need a clear sense of what feels like you.

What is a Session Vision Board?

A vision board is a collection of visual inspiration that helps you communicate your goals for the session. Think of it as a curated Pinterest board, saved Instagram posts, or even a folder of screenshots that answer these questions:

  • What do you want the final photos to feel like?

  • Are there any specific poses or moments you don’t want to miss?

  • Do you lean more towards an editorial and moody style, or a light and relaxed one?

It gives me a behind-the-scenes look into your taste and priorities, so I can shoot with purpose, not guesswork.

What to Include in Yours:

You don’t have to overthink it. But these 4 elements make a vision board especially helpful:

1. Tone & Mood

This can be as simple as describing your vibe (“moody black and white” or “soft golden hour”). Or you can use images that reflect the emotional tone you're going for.

2. Must-Have Poses or Moments

Is there a shot you’ve dreamed of? Like walking away with your horse, a certain fence at your barn, or a specific angle? Include it!
Your vision board is the place to mark what’s non-negotiable.

3. Outfits, Tack, Hair Inspiration

If you already have a look in mind, or if you’re deciding between options, sharing a visual reference helps me plan how to shoot it in a way that fits your style.

4. Examples from Past Sessions

You can even include past photos from me that you’ve seen and loved. That tells me exactly what drew you in, so I can deliver more of it.

Why It Works

The best sessions are a collaboration. When you bring your vision, and I bring the tools and timing to execute it, the session comes to life.
Visionboards allow me to:

  • Focus on what matters to you

  • Adapt the pacing and posing to your comfort zone

  • Capture what you’ll love before you even have to ask

How to Make and Share Yours

Here’s how most of my clients create theirs (in less than 20 minutes):

  • Pinterest Board: Create a private one and send me the link

  • DM or Email: Screenshot and send inspiration photos directly

  • My Session Form: After booking, I’ll send you a place to drop your must-haves

You don’t need to know photography. You just need to know what makes you feel confident and connected. I’ll take care of the rest.

Let’s Make It Yours

This session is about you, your story, your style, and your memories.
Your vision board gives me the clarity I need to make it personal.
